             In 1983 Nancy Beth Cruzan was in a devastating car accident. She fell into a persistent vegetative state. Her family petitioned the hospital to remove her from artificial hydration and nutrition. However the State of Missouri stated that allowing a person to die because therapy is ineffective is the same as killing the person. They felt that this case was not one of allowing someone to die but asking the medical profession to make someone die by starvation and dehydration. Nancy Beth had expressed whishes not to be on life support if it ever came to it. The other reason the court ruled against the Cruzan's was that the "States interest was not in the quality of life, the states interest is an unqualified interest in life." Finally in 1990 the family petitioned the state again and the medical treatment team was allowed to remove Nancy from life support. The Circuit Court found that Nancy would not benefit from any medical care and that her death would result not from life support being with drawn but that of natural causes.
