The Firing Squad and Gentlemen, Your Verdict analyzation

             The two stories that will be analyzed in this essay are "The Firing Squad" and "Gentlemen, Your Verdict". These two stories are military oriented and represent subjective responses to personal experiences. "The Firing Squad" is about Captain John Adam and how he has to choose between getting his bad records erased forever and starting from scratch or carrying out the execution of Private Jones. "The Gentlemen, Your Verdict" short story is about Lieutanant Commander Oram and how he has to decide wether he will kill 15 men to save five or if he should let all the men die.
             G.Y.V. is set in a courtroom where a soldier is telling his side of an occurance in a submarine that was trapped on the sands off Steins Point.The atmosphere of the story is full of worry and fear. This story also has the impact of a very important decision between life and death. The Lieutanant is forced to make a hard decision in order to save some of the crew members aboard the submarine. T.F.S. is set in Canadian headquarters located in Italy. The main character has a very difficult decision to make, and it also matters alot to his manhood and courage. The story has a very tense atmosphere with regret and mockery attached to the main character. Both the settings are very similair in relation to setting and the atmospheres are also in resemblance to one another.
             The main character in T.F.S. is Captain John Adam. The captain is facing alot of mental turmoil because of a past decision that took his manhood and courage. Captain John Adam seems to be a very innocent type of person, and is very intent on the fact that he believes Private Jones is innocent and should not be executed. He has a deep conversation with Brigadier Hatfield, discussing the idea of what is wrong and what is not wrong about executing a fellow soldier. This character teaches the reader values and how they play a role in someone's life. In G.Y.V. the main character is Lieutanant Commander
