The Athenian men allowed paranoia "to muddle their senses"; they went looking for trouble, reading between the lines and bringing back reports of pure fiction. (pg 109) The Athenian troops suspected propaganda was being said but the Spartans never explicitly said any of the anti-Athenian propaganda reported. Similarly, this is seen when the men mistaken the women for capturing the Acropolis for evil purposes. To restore peace, the women captured the Acropolis yet the men thought that the women intended to steal the money. With this belief, the men declared the women's rebellion an act comparable to Kleomenes – the Spartan who tried to rob Athens' treasury. However, in reality, the women are the ones who have been robbed of their fair share, a share that the women hold in sons "we hold stock in Athens, stock we paid for in sons." (pg 66) As the men mistaken the motive behind the women's capture of the Acropolis, the Athenians' misun-0derstand the Spartans. Therefore, the suspicion that arose between the two parties did not arise because they hated each other but because they misunderstood each other.
