Kurt Cobain: Murder or Suicide?

e attribute Kurt's "suicide" to his drug use and assumed depression, as the two often go hand in hand. Since his early twenties, he had had chronic stomach pain that no doctors could identify. His mother had it around this same age, but it eventually went away (since his death, it has been attributed to his scoliosis of the spine). His most commonly used excuse for his heroin use was to treat the stomach pain , although he had been dabbling in drugs since his teenage years.
During the summer of 1993, Cobain experienced what he called a "miracle." A doctor finally diagnosed his problem, which was a pinched nerve due to the abnormal curvature in his spine. He was finally able to treat it, and people noticed a drastic, and positive, change in his attitude towards life. His friend Dylan Carlson noted in Who Killed Kurt Cobain that "Kurt became a new person after that. He stopped retreating into the dark side that everybody associated him with and actually seemed cheerful" (Halperin & Wallace 86).
Kurt Donald Cobain was born on February 20, 1967 to Wendy O'Connor and Donald Cobain, in Hoquiam, Wa. He grew up in Aberdeen and was a very bright child. He showed an interest in music at a very early age, singing along to Beatles records and even writing simple songs on the piano. When he was 7, his parents divorced, and his attitude towards became a lot more negative. In 1992, O'Connor told Rolling Stone that "It just destroyed his life. He Changed completely. I think he was ashamed. And he became very inward-he just held everything. He became real shy" (Halperin & Wallace, 9). Until she moved out, O'Connor left all of Kurt's scribblings on his walls untouched. During this time, he wrote one that read "I hate Mom, I hate Dad. Dad hates Mom, Mom hates Dad." This poem sums up his perception of his parents' relationship, and he wasn't too far off.
