1. The word environment is a general term for all external conditions, influences and forces that affect and modify the life and development of all organisms.
2. Our standard of living is measured by the quantity of resources used. The environmental standard of living is measured by the amount of reserves left. Which means the standards of living are considered high when resource reserves are still available, instead of used up.
The equations are as follows: - Avg. standard of living = Resources used
(HUMANS) Population
- Avg. standard of living = Reserves Left
(ENVIRONMENT) Population
An emerging trend in our standard of living is to consider opportunity costs of resource use (i.e. to evaluate the costs and benefits of projects such as mining). There are many factors that affect the reserves left in the environmental standard of living. They are things like: new technology; price; recycling and reuse and so on. If we assume we are mining minerals, then our standard of living is measured on the amount of the resource that has been mined, whereas the environmental standard of living is measured by the amount of reserves left.
3a. The Kyoto Protocol was established to reduce greenhouse emissions by harnessing the forces of the global marketplace to protect the environment.
b. There are four key aspects of the Kyoto Protocol. They are:
- Timetables for industrialized nations
Emission targets are to be reached over a five-year budget period instead of a single year. This allows emissions to be averaged across a budget year period which increases flexibility by helping to smooth out short-term fluctuations in economic performance or weather, either of which could spike emissions in a particular year. The emission targets include all
