he pieces of DNA by size. Usually the gel agarose is used. Then the DNA is denatured with alkali. It is then transferred to nitrocellulose. Now the filters are soaked in a blocking solution. The labeled probe is added to the block filter in buffer and incubated for several hours to allow the probe molecules to find the DNA targets. The length of the restriction fragments recognized by the probe is diluted in this population. This phenomenon is known as restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP). Now any probe that is on the filter that is not stuck to the target is washed off. Finally, x-ray film is exposed by radioactive emissions from the labeled sequences. The developed film, or autorad, shows the pattern of the DNA profile. (White 1995).
The newer method that is used is called Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Analysis. This type of testing is done with a Thermal Cycler. Technicians place the DNA in the machine testing for only six specific traits. There is a chance that this test will show a match for two different people. However, submission of a less common trait to be tested will narrow the findings. When the scientists put the results on a nylon cloth, a blue dot appears if the DNA is a match and nothing appears for a miss. (Wolfe 2000)
Genetic fingerprints are the blue prints of humans. They have many uses in modern technology and they will serve many uses in the future. As science keeps progressing, we will eventually have a better understanding of the human body and how it works. Some of the main uses of the fingerprints are diagnosis of inherited diseases, personal identification, biological evidence, developing cures for inherited disorders, separation of extinct species, and paternity testing (Betsch 1994).
Scientists can detect and diagnose inherited disorders in prenatal and newborn babies. If there is a high risk of bearing a child with an inherited disease the doctors will run seve...
