Persuasive Essay - Public Support for the Arts in Canada

             While we as Canadians support our culture in principle, our support for it in practice is an artificial concept; it is an illusion that is intertwined with Canadian pride and a lot of government subsidy. In a country where our citizens are given the freedom to choose, it is sadly noted that many choose the way of our American neighbours. Many decide to do so simply because they are unaware of any cultural activities that are happening right under their noses. Some are simply not interested.
             Every generation of a Canadian government has believed that encouraging a "home-grown" cultural identity is important, and in turn have passed many Canadian content laws, financing Canadian-produced theatre performances, musical acts, books, and magazines to name a few. With a variety of almost unbeatable by world standards cultural institutions such as the Royal Ontario Museum, The Hummingbird Centre, and The Living Arts Centre it almost takes one's breath away at the selection of various aspects of artistic talent that is situated right in the heart of our own nation. It is quite heartbreaking witnessing the efforts of establishments such as the Canada Council go unfulfilled, as a large number of Canadians do not participate in any form of arts.
             It may be that our children are not educated enough about it from the beginning and choose not to gain any knowledge of the topic in their latter years, or it may be a lack of promotion on the part of the cultural society. It is not, however, the fault of the people who would be more than glad to attend an opera, visit an art gallery or listen to many talented Canadian artists. The information is accessible, but many are afraid to access it, due to fears and concerns such as (and not limited to) opinions of our American counterparts, lack of interest in the community towards the subject of a confusion whether one would enjoy the activity or not.
