Georg lukas and max horkheimer

             In The Irrational Chasm Between Subject and Object, I feel Georg Lukacs is saying that more people are thinking socially, and developing social theories to resolve problems in present society. However, people are forgetting that we can find out a lot about the present by studying the past. He writes "we see the unhistorical and antihistorical character of bourgeois thought most strikingly when we consider the problem of the present as a historical problem." I feel he is saying, history provides excellent examples of how to deal with problems of the present. For example, in pre-Industrial Revolution times, there were unhappy, lower class minorities supporting the bourgeois. This was not something that occurred with the development of large factories and cities. In the middle Ages, there were peasants who worked to produce goods for the noble class. Social classes have always been a part of society, and were not formed by Capitalism. I feel he is saying that Marx and other anti-Capitalist sociologist thinkers should have paid more attention to history before developing many of their theories.
             I believe what Lukas means by, the irrational chasm between subject and object is we distance ourselves from our own experience and rely on the experience of others. For example, a healthy person sitting in the house watching a basketball game on TV. There is no rational reason why he watches others have fun, when he is perfectly capable of walking outside and experiencing a game of basketball for himself.
             In Notes of Science and the Crisis, I feel that Max Horkheimer is saying that science plays a major role in our social life-processes. However, the link between science and social problems are often over looked. Science tends to be grouped with history or mathematics, but in actuality it deserves its own separate category.
