To hate because one does not understand them is prejudice; which Shakespeare shows well in the comedy he wrote The Merchant of Venice. The characters in the play, play a big role in hatred towards others. People in today's society act and speak the same voice of prejudice towards others like the characters in the play did. In The Merchant of Venice stereotypes are used all over the place and against people who are feared just because of their religion. I have shown acts of hatred towards others in my life time and I am sure people have been prejudice towards me too. People are prejudice against other people who they do not understand; which the characters portray well in the comedy by Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice.
             A big role in the play is hatred towards others, which the characters act out well. "I am not a Jew. Hath not a Jew's eyes? Hath not a Jew's hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions?" ( Shakespeare 92) Shylock is saying that he is a Jew and that he deserves to get back at Lorenzo by saying, "To bait a fish withal. If it will feed nothing else, it will feed me revenge" (Shakespeare 92). So by saying this his real means are to kill Lorenzo just because he is a Christian and even though he can pay him back three times the amount that he really owes Shylock he does not care. Then Salanio says, "Here comes another of the tribe; a third cannot be match'd, unless the devil himself turn Jew" (Shakespeare 92). Now Salanio throws hatred back in Shylocks face about the fact that he is a Jew and Jews are known as the devil to Christians.
