Hester's passion is seen in her stubborness and in her love. Strong willed Hester refuses to break promises. She will not tell her town who her accomplice in the affair is, and she will not reveal Chillingworth's idenetiy to Dimsdale. Hester's passion is also what makes her a compassionate maternal figure. Not only is she a caring and loving mother to her daughter, Pearl, but she is also maternal in respect to her community: she collects food and clothing for the poor. From Hester's introduction to the reader, she appears a strong-minded and passionate person.
