Israel is a small country located in southwest Asia. It occupies the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea. Jordan is located to its east and Lebanon is to its north. The capital of Israel is Jerusalem, which is also the largest city, however most countries do not recognize it as the capital. They acknowledge the capital as Tel Aviv-Yafo, because that is where all the embassies are located.
Israel's official language is Hebrew, although they also speak Arabic and English. The majority of the population is Jewish. Some of their other religions include Muslim, Christian, Druze, and Baha'i. The Israelis life expectancy is about 77 years for males and about 81 years for females.
Israel has many landforms. One of these is Mount Meron, which is the highest point in Israel. Israel's plains run from Haifa to the coast of Jordan. They also form the eastern border of Israel. In southern Israel there is a triangular dessert region. This region is called the Negev.
Israel's government is known as a republic. The leader is known as a prime minister. The prime minister is Ariel Sharon. He is elected in February 2001 when he defeated Ehud Barak who was elected in May of 1999. Israel does not have a written constitution, yet they do have many basic laws. Their central location of government is held in Jerusalem. You can vote at the age 18.
Some of the natural resources of Israel are potash, bromine, magnesium, copper, clay, and natural gas. In areas near the Dead Sea there are small deposits of natural gas. Just like most of the Middle Eastern countries, Israel is wealth from oil. They also have many exports. For example they export finished diamonds, machine parts, fruits and vegetables, clothing, and organic chemicals. Their major trade partners are the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Belgium, and Hong Kong.
