In many places both past and present, women have been treated very poorly. They weren't given the same rights or opportunities as men.
             In America, the treatment of women has come a long way. For a long time women couldn't vote. In 1920, Amendment 19 was passed. It stated that "the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex".
             Even after women were given the right to vote, they still didn't have as many opportunities as men did. Women had "their place" which was at home cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the kids. Now women can go to work just like men and pursue a career.
             In ancient Greece women were treated pretty badly, although some places were worse than others were. In Sparta, women were treated fairly well for the time period. They were allowed to participate in activities such as sports with men. They also had control of their husband's land while he was away at war. Athenian women were not treated half as well. They weren't allowed to go to school or to participate in government. They didn't ever have control over land either.
             The Taliban gained control of Afghanistan in 1994. Because of the Taliban women and girls suffered great restrictions. Women couldn't attend school, whereas before the Taliban took over there had been thousands of female students. They weren't allowed to work outside of the home, except in limited circumstances in the medical field. Women weren't allowed to deal with men shopkeepers. Women also had a strict dress code. They were not allowed to appear outside the home unless wearing a burqa (a head to toe covering). The burqa was previously worn by women, but it wasn't an enforced dress code.
