Red Cloud's Speech to the president analyzed

             Red Cloud's speech was directed towards all white people who were taking the Sioux's land and to the United States government. The speech asked for help from the whites to bring peace and cease the hostilities between the Native Americans and the white people.
             Red Cloud was the chief of one of the Sioux tribes. He asked for help and informed all of the white people that Native Americans were the same as the whites. He told them that the Native Americans wanted peace and were only trying to make a living. Red Cloud brown nosed to his audience in order to get them to listen to him and accept what he had to say. The occasion of Red Cloud's speech was the ongoing violence between the whites and Native Americans. Red Cloud appealed to the whites by quoting an official of their government. "The riches we have in this world, Secretary Cox said truly, we cannot take with us to the next world." (pp. 257) This official was a respected and well known person. Red Cloud used this to get people to realize that he wasn't just saying this for his own benefit. Logic was also used to persuade people to listen to him. Red Cloud asked the audience questions in order to prove how illogical the treatment of the Native Americans was.
             This speech teaches many things about the Native Americans. Red Cloud was a powerful and respected leader. His speech taught people that the Native Americans were making a large effort to make peace and it was the whites who continued the violence. People made stereotypes about Native Americans without knowing the truth. Red Cloud uncovered the truth in hopes of stopping further mistreatment.
