Since 1934, radio and television have operated under licenses granted by the Federal Communications Commission, which is not allowed to exercise censorship. In 1978 in the Pacifica v. FCC, a radio station aired "George Carlin's 7 Dirty Words" and a man, who had his son in the ca,r called and complained. The FCC took action and filed suit against the company in charge of the radio station, Pacifica. The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in favor of the FCC, declaring that offensive and harmful material entered the privacy of people's home with this broadcast.
