Creating Laws in Support of Gay Marriage

             The articles "Let Gays Marry," by Andrew Sullivan, and "Leave Marriage Alone," by William Bennet are very opposite each other. They are both about the same topic: whether or not to allow same-sex marriages. However, each of the authors has very differing opinions on the subject. These two articles are about a very delicate issue in our society today. Hopefully, after reviewing them, readers will be able to make a more educated decision about which side to take. Each of the authors expertly delineates their point of view on the matter, making both articles very convincing.
             In "Let Gays Marry," author Andrew Sullivan believes that same-sex marriages should be allowed. This is because they are citizens, like anyone else in America, and deserve to be treated equally. Gays and lesbians seek this equality and do not want to hide who they are. They want to get married for the same reasons all couples do. It is human instinct to want to publicize the fact that one has found the person they wish to spend the rest of their life with, whether one is a homosexual or heterosexual. Letting gays would not take away anyone else's rights. It would simply share these rights with others who ought to have the same treatment. A logical way of doing this would be to give out civil marriage licenses. That way, there would be no issue with religion, because there is a separation of church and state. Sullivan also conveys the point that our definition of marriage has been changing forever. No longer does marriage mean that the woman becomes the property of the man, and no longer do marriages have to be between people of the same race. He states that "no one has any more of a choice to be gay than to be black or white or male or female."
