Marijuana

             Marijuana is a harmful drug to your body and mind. It is the most commonly used illicit drug in the United States and tends to be the first drug teens use. An estimated 66 million Americans of all ages have tried marijuana and roughly 12 million of them are current users. Marijuana is detrimental to your body and mind. Marijuana affects your driving skills, and marijuana leads to the use of other drugs.
             Marijuana causes problems to your lungs and airways, brain, and causes cancer. People who smoke marijuana often develop the same kinds of breathing problems that cigarette smokers develop: coughing and wheezing. They are also at a greater risk of getting lung infections like pneumonia. Some studies show that when people have smoked marijuana for years the drug takes a toll on mental functions. It affects memory, attention, and learning. It also relieves people from anxiety in a negative way1. Marijuana also causes cancer, studies show that someone who smokes five joints per week may be taking in as many cancer causing chemicals as someone who smokes a pack of cigarettes a day2 .
             Marijuana and driving do not mix3 . Users have delayed responses to sights and sounds they need to notice. Marijuana has serious and harmful effects on the skills required to drive safely: alertness, the ability to concentrate, coordination, and the ability to react quickly. These effects can last up to 24 hours after smoking marijuana. Marijuana's use can make it difficult to judge distances and react to signals and sounds on the road.
             Marijuana usually leads to the use of other drugs. Long term studies of high school students and their pattern of drug use have shown that very few young people use other illegal drugs without first trying marijuana.
