This letter is a request for late withdrawal from two classes. The classes are:
English Composition I (CRN 11285-English 101) and
Introduction to the Theatre (CRN 10035-THE 135).
I received an "F" in both of these courses because of absenteeism. The absences were due to illnesses. On Tuesday, October 16th I went to the emergency room at Patty A. Clay, at midnight. This was after I was sick for a week and my throat was swelled to the point that I could not breathe well. On Wednesday, October 17th I went to the EKU infirmary. Both places thought I had tonsillitis, gave me antibiotics and recommended I have them removed immediately. My dad came to Richmond and got me because I was not able to drive home to Somerset. He took me to my doctor in Somerset, (October 20) who requested blood work and subsequently I was diagnosed with mononucleosis (mono). I stayed in bed, at home, the following week. I then came back to campus, but continued to be unable to attend all my classes. On November 9th I went back to my doctor in Somerset for follow-up blood work and still had mono at that time.
I missed so much class instruction, after contracting mono, that even with e-mailing my instructors, making appointments with them to make up my work, etc. I could not pass these two classes. It also resulted in poor grades in my other classes with three C's and one B for a total of only 8 hours credit for the semester. This has put me behind schedule as well as on academic probation my first semester. In addition to already being behind, if I am permitted to take only 13 hours second semester I will get further behind.
I do not have a history of absenteeism or poor grades. I missed only 1½ days off school while in high school and only 2½ days during my K-12 years. I had a 4.0 GPA my final semester of high school and a 3.3 cumulative GPA.
