Culture

             What is culture? There are many things within any given society that are considered "cultural." However, to understand all of those things and their place in that society, one must first understand what makes up culture. Things such as customs, beliefs, and events are some of the things that make up what we know as culture. Culture is different in each society all over the world. Thus, there are many more details that make culture an entirely different theory.
             One writer that makes an interesting argument on culture is Clyde Kluckholm. On his essay, Kluckholm makes a few interesting points. First, he links culture to biology and to nature. Kluckholm claims that, "Culture determinism is as one-sided as biological determinism. Culture arises out of human nature... both by man's biology and by natural laws." In other words, Kluckholm explains that there is a strong connection between culture and biology and nature to such extent that might even be the results of each other. In his essay, Kluckholm describes "culture" a number of times. One interesting description of culture is his comparison of it to a map. He says:
             Culture is like a map. Just as a map isn't the territory but an abstract representation of a particular area, so also a culture is an abstract description of trends toward uniformity in the words, deeds, and artifacts of a human group. If a map is accurate and you can read it, you won't get lost; if you know a culture you will know your way around life of a society.
             In other words, Kluckholm describes "culture" as a mere conceptual representation of any given group of people.
