             1. The British novelist Fay Weldon offers this observation about happy endings: "The writers, I do believe, who get the best and most lasting response from readers are the writers who offer a happy ending through moral development. By a happy ending, I do not mean mere fortunate events: a marriage or a last minute rescue from death; but some kind of spiritual reassessment or moral reconciliation, even with the self, even at death." Choose a novel or play that has the kind of ending Weldon describes. In a well-written essay, identify the spiritual reassessment or moral reconciliation evident in the ending and explain its significance in the work as a whole.
             Hatred and compassion are two different words that seem to have this weird connection all the time. A person cannot say that he is compassionate if he has hatred in his self. These two words can never be connected at the same time. The narrative poem, The Iliad, by Homer, focuses on the character's hatred towards each other to prove that they are better than the other. Some of the characters try to prove that they are far better than the other until it comes to the point that they put their lives at stake.
             Agamemnon, a character full of pride, is the root of hatred in the story. The gods are always on his side, and he always acquires the benefits in all of his wars. For example, when Achilles weeps because of the unfairly treatment of the gods, he says, "You [Agamemnon] thick skinned, shameless, greedy fool! I have seen more action hand to hand in those assaults than you have, but when the time for sharing comes, the greater share is always yours" (Homer 196). This shows that even though Achilles is always the one doing the fair and clean wars, Agamemnon always end up as the hero in the eyes of the gods.
