The treatment of criminals is an ongoing unresolved issue within our society and that has also perceived our society as being too lenient on our punishments. It raises concerns, as well, as how and what punishment should be dealt in regard to children committing horrific acts of violence. Government spending, including citizens' taxes, used for the prison system which include building new institutions and the scientific treatments employed for these offenders of crimes is a significant concern for the citizens.
I am very interested in this topic because of the different aspects this issue involves. It involves politics, morals, values and religious beliefs. In my opinion, I am a truly believer of the greatly known saying "an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth," when it comes down to what type of punishment should be imposed on that individual who has committed a crime. Even if some may not want to admit it, we are involved personally with these individuals who are being incarcerated. Children are committing crimes that one would had never believed that something so dreadful could be acted out by a child. Why should we be less merciful on a child than an adult? Yes, factors are brought up of what causes may be involved to influence a child to commit crimes and acts of violence. But, does that condemn them of denying a person's life?
What is the appropriate punishment for crimes? The death penalty, life sentences, parole, and rehabilitation are some of the ways that we as a society deal with crimes and acts of violence. This is an issue that brings up controversy and is still remaining unsolved. I want to be able to enlighten myself on some of the different perspectives on the topic of the treatment of criminals.
