News to Who?

             Everyday millions of Americans are bombarded with news reports of what is happening around the world by corporate-owned news stations. And for a majority of these Americans, this is their only source of international, national, and local news.
             "What is wrong with this," you may be asking yourself. If NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox, and CNN are all covering the same story it must be important, right? Important to who? Important to them.
             Most of the news covered by these stations, if looked at carefully, can be seen to serve some interest of the corporation which owns the station.
             NBC, for example, is owned by General Electric. NBC often covers stories promoting the use of the military. General Electric produces many products for the military and generates huge profits by doing so. The more the American people see the need for military spending, the more General Electric will profit. And this is just one example. ABC is owned by Disney, CBS is owned by Viacom, and the list goes on. The point is that the news we are exposed to everyday, may not be the news that is important to us.
             So, where does one go for news that is important to the rest of the world? Many have started reading alternative press. Because many popular newspapers and news websites are also owned by huge, gatekeeping corporations, a new wave of journalism has come to the rescue. Now that printing has become an affordable task, and journalists do not need the backing of one of these "Big Brother" type corporations to start their own news releases, they are coming out with independently owned and run publications. These publications offer stories not seen in the narrow scope of national media.
