Jane Eyre written by charlotte Bronte, based on her school life in the Victorian era. Women expected to at home, look after the children but if they were not married and had a good education they would be teachers such as Jane Eyre grew to be. Jane the main character in the novel has a strong passion towards justice, the importance of truth and freedom to her.
             This shown with the adult Jane, narrating the story giving insight to the readers understanding, of young Jane's feelings.
             At the beginning of the novel Jane is wrongly punished, and locked in the red room, Jane rebels against her harsh treatment by the Reeds Jane of course, engages in a laudable act of rebellion and self-assertation. Nevertheless, the emphasis of the chapter is not really upon this, but the heroine realisation of her own powers, which are tested in this chapter for the first time, "what strength had I to dart retaliation at my antagonist", she begins by asking herself. When she makes her verbal assault, "I gathered my energies and launched them in this blunt sentence" she, is herself socked at the force of her own words, as Mrs Reed is silence and snubbed, "Mrs Reed looked frighten... she was lifting up her hands... and even twisting her face as if she would cry".
             The outburst here prefigures the moment near the end of the novel when she again has the undoubted satisfaction of realising the full force of her tongue and telling another person exactly what she things of them.
             After the outburst, Mrs reed finds this outburst adequate to move Jane to Lowood institution; "I will send her ... to leave Gateshead in a day of two"
             At Lowood Jane has her likes and dislikes but meets Helen Burns. Helen is the first person in the novel she has a relationship with, looks up to her, "but it is not enough if others don't love me I would die
             Jane appreciates what she has but has not have the intellect...
