His mother, Sarah, wasn't very happy about the engagement, so we agreed to keep it a secret for one year until we were sure that we wanted to get married. After one year, we were sure and we got married on March 17, 1905.
We had 6 children between 1906 and 1913, one of whom died from influenza. His name was Franklin Delano Roosevelt Jr. Our other children's names were Anna, James, Elliot, Franklin Jr., and John.
In my early years of being married Franklin and I lived with his mother Sarah in adjoining townhouses that she had built for us. At first I hated the idea of living with her, but I soon accepted her and I began to love her very much, we did almost everything together.
When Franklin was elected to the state senate in New York, we moved to Albany and in 1912 I attended the state Democratic Party for the first time. But, once again, we moved in 1913 when Franklin was appointed Secretary of the Navy. That is when we hired Lucy Mercer. That same year, WW1 broke out in Europe.
