He told Kugelmass to get into the cabinet, to shut the door when he throws into it the novel Kugelmass, himself, would choose, and to tap it three times afterwards. After doing so, Kugelmass would find himself plunged into that book where he can meet the women he wishes to get acquainted with. All these cost a 'double sawbuck' or twenty dollars. Kugelmass was at first hesitant as he was not sure of the safety and efficiency of the equipment. He went for it afterwards, anyway, owing it to Persky's persuasion.
             After choosing among several literary female characters including Carrie Meeber of the novel "Sister Carrie" and Ophelia of "Hamlet", Kugelmass finally went for the French Emma Bovary, the heroine of Gustave Flaubert's novel "Madame Bovary". True enough, he appeared in the bedroom of Emma Bovary's house at Yonville. He was astounded by her beauty, something that his wife, whom he described as the "troglodyte who shared his bed", did not possess. He and the beautiful and flirtatious Emma got along very well as they "reclined under a tree and whispered together and told each other deeply meaningful things with their eyes". (58) After some time of flirting with the Madame of Yonville, Kugelmass had to go back to his time and world because he remembered that he still had to meet the "ball and chain" (63), which was Daphne, at Lexington Avenue.
             The next day, he visited Persky again and was able to transport to Yonville to meet Emma. They talked, laughed, and made love. These activities were repeated for several months even though Daphne got suspicious and the readers of the novel "Madame Bovary" already grew confused of the sudden appearance of a bald Jew character named Kugelmass.
