The analysis of setting of "Our Town" by Wilder
According to William Kenney, that setting includes the actual geographical or the place where the action takes place. The action of "Our Town" takes place in the kitchen, the soda fontain, the congregational and the graveyard on the hill.
As many scenes in this play take place in the kitchen of the Gibbses and The Webbs, this place is dominant for the play. The daily life of the characters happens here.The kitchen is provided with stove, a wood box, chairs and tables, besides there are a window and a back door.
The significance of the kitchen that dominates the paly lies on its interior, the chairs and the tables. In the first and the second act of the play the tables and the chairs are still on the stage. In the third act, however, when emily revisits the earth and the kitchen on her birth day,they are not on the stage anymore. It reveals that the dead do not stay intrested in things, ambitions and pleasure.
The importance of fontain is that Emily and George have conversation about each other. They not only begin to pay more attention and fall in love each other, but also admit their weakneses.This conversation seems meaningless but it results in a big decision - a significant one- to live together.
The other place which is also important is the congragetional. Since this place used by the stage manager, George and Emily are confirmed to be wife and husband.
The last essential place where Mrs. Gibbs, Emily,aquire in death the knowledge that most people waste the pricious of their time is the graveyard.
While The first act of the play happens in the morning and afternoon in Spring,the second and the third act happens in Summer and Winter. It can be concluded that spring represents for a youthful of life when George and Emily grow up. The Summer and Winter mean the marriage and the dead of the main character.
