In 1857 Twain's newspaper career came to a holt when he learned how to become a
steamboat pilot. Twain ended this career in 1861 because the Civil War almost put an end to all
river traffic. At this point Twain enlisted in the Confederate Army as a lieutenant. After two
weeks of service he managed to get himself discharged. In 1862 Twain got his first pen name,
