Oedipus Rex Quote: Relation To Today

             Throughout time, certain ideas just never seem to go away, as they remain in society. So as time goes on, many of the same themes and ideas are used to tell a story. For this reason, it can be said that these certain themes and ideas are universal in literature. One of these is in the play Oedipus Rex by Sophocles. Creon asks "Did he look like a man in his right mind?" In this quote, located on page 26 in Scene II of the play, Creon is asking the Choragos if Oedipus was sane when he charged Creon with the murder of King Laius. This idea of sanity is universal in literature, and in life. Therefore, this quote and the question of sanity both relate to today in respect to the O.J. Simpson case, the movie "Con Air," and the case of the Unabomber.
             In the O.J. Simpson case, the question of sanity was brought up, as well as in Oedipus Rex, through this quote. In this case, Simpson was accused of the murder of his former wife and Ronald Goldman. One of the questions at the beginning of the case was that if Simpson did kill the two, was he sane when he did it? This question never had to be answered, because Simpson was acquitted. But had he been found insane, he may have gotten away with the crime anyway, because a person is not considered legally responsible for their actions if they were insane. Simpson was later found liable in a civil case for the death of the two, so the sanity question was answered, negatively. In summary, this quote from Oedipus Rex relates to a modern court case, that of O.J. Simpson.
             The quote also relates to the movie "Con Air," in that sanity is brought up in that movie also. In this movie, trying to protect himself and his wife, a man punches an attacker in the head, killing him. Before he is sent to jail, sanity is a question.
