r is the book of all saints; and everyone, in whatever situation he may be, finds in that situation psalms and words that fit his case, that suit him as if they were put there just for his sake, so that he could not put it better himself, or find or wish for anything better.
             The Jews used the Psalter in their worship. Depending on the type of psalm, the Jews used psalms for specific occasions. The Songs of Ascent were sung as they journeyed to Jerusalem to sacrifice, Thanksgiving hymns were sung as they sacrificed and at certain feasts, laments were sung at funerals, Israel's history was recorded in certain of the psalms and was used in the teaching of the young. Though used by the Jews for specific times and in specific circumstances, both individually and corporately, the psalms are not bound by time or their content. Today, the church uses them in corporate worship and individuals use them in private worship.
             Not only do we find expressions of deep emotion within the psalms, but we glean many theological descriptions of God. Granted, the theology of the Psalms is always to be balanced with the rest of Scripture so that we might not be misled, but nevertheless it is rich with the concepts of who God is and how He works. For example, the theological connotations of Psalm 110, a relatively short psalm, which we will examine, are vast!
             It is clear from Scripture that King David was the author of Psalm 110. Not only is his name found in the superscription, but the New Testament confirms his authorship in Matthew 22:41-46 by Jesus, in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 2:34) by Peter, and is validated by its use in Hebrews. David was of the line of Judah and reigned while the kingdoms of Israel and Judah were united from 1010-970 B.C. He is accredited with writing the majority of the psalms.
