             When he first arrived in Boston, Ella gave Malcolm a chance to get a feel for the city and explore and advised him to stay away from the ghetto part, but Malcolm found this part of town much more exciting than the others. He found the sharply dressed black men with their hair like a white man (conk) fascinating. Malcolm decided to find a job. He met this man named Shorty who was also from Michigan and who would help him get his first job as a shoeshine boy. Malcolm would continue to work in many fields (railroads, bartender) but eventually he became hip to the night life of Harlem. He even got a red conk and bought a zoot suit which was in at that time. He would learn to dance and even dance so well that he became known as Detroit Red. He met many famous performers as they too were impressed with his dancing ability. However, listening to hustlers who bought drinks, he became schooled in the art of hustling. Drugs, Thievery and armed robbery were among the many things he learned.
