To a young infant, if a toy that he/she was playing with is suddenly hid under a piece of cloth, then the toy no longer exists and the child will automatically lose interest. In older infants, if a toy is taken away and hidden then there is an ongoing battle to recover it. Once this is established into an infants mind then Direct Groping begins to take place. During direct groping, a child will vary his/her movements and see how the results will differ. The infant discovers that with the aid of a stick or string, they can pull objects to themselves.
The second stage of Cognitive Development is the Preoperational Stage, which occurs between the ages of 2 and 6 years. At this stage the child is involved in him/herself. The child is egocentric and self-centered. Egocentrism is basically the thought that the world shares the child's exact feelings and desires. This sense of oneness with the world leads to the child's assumptions of Magic Omnipotence, meaning not only was the world created for them, but they can control it as well. Another factor of this stage is artificialism or the idea that humans create all natural phenomena. During the Preoperational stage, the child begins to develop the use of symbols but cannot manipulate them. The child has the capability to use language and words to represent non-visible things. Also, the child begins to understand the difference between reality and fantasy and also begins to understand sex roles in society.
The third stage, that occurs between the age of 7 and 12 years is known as the Concrete Operational Stage.
