             Comparing and Contrasting Dickinson and Frost Poems
             Although sharing many individual similarities, both Dickinson and Frost portray their own personal objectives on their hardships, which is signified as darkness or as night. Both poems describe someone's loneliness, whether it be a group of people or an individual person. Each poem also contains its own distinct tone, one showing hopefulness while the other illustrates a more lonely or despondent tone. Inside each poem, you will also find that they both may have similar or different points of views, imagery, and structure.
             In the Dickinson poem, the imagery of darkness is being symbolic of a hardship. The poem tells of a group of people, which can also literally be taken as a person's eyes, that explain going from lightness to darkness and having to adjust to the differences and a hardship. The neighbor in the poem symbolizes that there was someone there that was wise and helped them make their way. The analysis of the "eyes", or someone's individual self, being able to focus on the road represent that they realize that there is nothing to worry about and that as soon as you focus and the problem and deal with it, it is easier to see the "road" or in the poem, the road to a joyous life.
             In the Frost poem " Acquainted with the Night" Frost compares his hardships to the night. He first tells how he has been in and out of the rain, which means that he has been through many hard situations. He also explains in various stanzas how he is alone and has no one to help him but himself. Although he shows that he does not want the attention from the outside world, he emotionally wishes that someone cared. This is revealed when he hears a cry from far away and he stops to hear if it is a call for him to come back or to tell him good-bye, but it is not, which deepens his loneliness.
