to July 1994. There is not one, two or even three specific events that directly caused the civil war, but a collaboration of many events, which caused the genocide. Thus, the main insecurities that contributed to Rwanda's massive migration were the European conflict, severe oppression, and extreme poverty.
When a person is forced out or has left a country because they feel that they have no other options, they are usually referred to a refugee. The United Nations has also given a more definite definition of a refugee. At a 1951 convention relating to the status of refugees, the United Nations defined a refugee as:
"a person who owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality, and is unable to or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country..."(www.unhcr.ch).
There are many people who fall under this definition of refugees; throughout the world it is estimated that about 19 million individuals need help throughout 120 countries (www.unhcr.ch). There are many different situations and reasons for people to become a refugee. Sometimes the situation could be very complex that there is no one reason or event that creates this desperation event.
