Ethical Dilemma: The Generous Teacher

             If a teacher elects to give an entire class an A whether or not they show up, is that his or her prerogative? Or is it dishonest, educationally destructive and morally wrong? I can defiantly say that most people would agree with me when I say it is not only deceptive, it is unethical. A college professor is paid to not only teach but force the students to strive for their grades. If that is not accomplished, the professor has not done his job.
             When the professor hands all students the same grades he deceives a large number of people. He first deceives his boss, the Dean, a delegate of the taxpayers. The Dean expects his professor will do his job regardless of tenure. His position is to preside over the faculty making sure that they are working in a proper manner. If a teacher neglects to do his job, as we have established, he deceives the Dean as well as the taxpayers. The professor also deceives the future employers of the student. When these employers look at the academic resume of the student they assume that the student is qualified for the job or not based partly upon his or her grades. When these grades are obtained in a non-traditional way, the legitimacy of them is questioned. Employers have the belief that their potential employee has received his or her grades by hard work and dedication. When these standards are undermined, it corrupts the whole system of grading and makes previous grades insignificant, thus deceiving the employer regarding the qualifications of the prospect. Lastly and most importantly, the student is deceived. Handing out perfect grades will cause many students, whether right or wrong, to neglect their work for lack of importance. The temptation is indeed a form of deception and ultimately deprives a student of an education.
