The Profitability of Slavery

n American belief that Africans were like "childlike animals" the Africans were to find that they were in a new place, and were being sold off individually and that their humanity would be taken away for the luxury of economic profit. Many of these slave transactions were barter or exchange for goods. However in the eighteenth century, twenty sterling was a typical price to pay for a healthy slave. Slaves were hired by the day, the month, or by the year and were initially 'promised' in the agreement food, shelter, clothing and medical care, in addition t a stipulated wage. An abundance of slaves were consequently forced into labor. The Slave trade was the beginning of this economic revolution, which was to spark an enormous profit for the slave masters. The slave trade was important for the white slave masters because the slaves that were bought were assigned to specific plantations to perform various planting of crops. Among them was the infamous cotton picking which became the highest labor industry in the Southern United States. It was essential for plantations to have strong, young, male slaves that would last long strenuous hours so that cotton was picked in large amounts so the cotton can be sold according to the demand. Of course with the rising demand of cotton in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century, the supply had to be constant, and healthy slaves were essential so that they could be worked harder.
The purpose of this essay is to make evident that the cotton industry was a temporary success at the price of African enslavement and the subjugation of Africans was an economic bonus for the American man because it allowed him to achieve profitable goals without the expenses of paid labor to the African slaves. Surprisingly, the Americans were not the first to realize such labor benefits from the African people rather, it was the early Europeans that noticed the economic benefits of African slave labor.
