Some responsibilities of the aediles were maintain the quality of roads in Rome, regulate traffic, oversee public structures, supervise water supplies, administrate over the markets, administrate over the official weights and measures, in charge of public morals, and arrange public festivals and games to supply entertainment to the masses. The popularity that a candidate gained as an aedile was needed for later election into higher office. A lot of money was needed for a candidate to aquire and hold this office. The term of office for an aedile was one year.
