Ella Enchanted is a fiction Newberry Honor book written by Gail Carson Levine. It is about a girl that has been given the "gift" of obedience at her birth. She must obey every order whether it is hopping on one foot for one day or killing herself. She tries to escape from her curse but she doesn't know how. Until then, she has to obey all the orders she has been given.
The main character is Ella. She is a sixteen-year-old girl with brown hair and blue eyes. She is strong willed, because she doesn't accept her fate. Has a sense of humor. She shows courage and perseverance by facing all the difficulties and never giving up. After her mother died, she had to live with her father who she didn't like but she got over it and kept looking for ways to break her curse.
The story takes place during the Middle Ages in Western Europe because everyone lived in castles or on manors. More specifically the story takes place in a fiction country called Kyrria. Ella lives in a village called Frell in Northern Kyrria. I think that the story takes place during fall, because there were a lot of rains.
After Ella's mother died, her father sent her to Finishing School in the village of Jenn with two other girls- Hattie and Olive. They didn't like Ella. As soon as they realized that she does everything she has been told to, they took advantage of her. Ella couldn't stand them anymore, so she ran away to a giant's farm to find the fairy that laid the curse on her. Unfortunately her father was there, too. When they returned home, her father married Hattie and Olive's mother, Dame Olga because of her money.
The story is told from first person point of view in a flashback. Both formal and informal sentences are used. Usually when something is being described, the author used more complex sentences. The narrator describes in great detail. The language is informal and the tone is sad and serious
