chapter 2. Two that stick out to me are parental presence and peer pressure.
My perspective on parental presence is that it has a good deal of influence, but
not 100%. The way a child is brought up can and will effect them as they grow
up, but children also learn things from other people and learn even more from
life as they grow up causing them to make decisions of their own. A child needs
to be in a good environment with good parents and no bad associations. When
there are bad associations peer pressure can be the cause of a lot of children's
actions. Going around with the "wrong crowd" to me is directly associated with
criminal behavior and juvenile delinquency.
The section of chapter 2 that I had extreme interests was the section on
vulnerable immigrants. This section caught my eye because of what is
happening with terrorism lately. Felson names some things that can lead to
immigrants committing crime. He said that it is important whether members of an
immigrant group show up in America with the whole family, how the United
States is very lenient compared to other countries on immigration, also whether
or not a given immigrant group contains relatively more skidders, and the sheer
physical stature of immigrants. The one that sticks out to me the most is how the
United States are more lenient than other countries. This leniency allows us to
get immigrants who could not get in to other countries so they come to the U. S.
and that is not a good sign for us. We live in the best country in the world and
stronger actions are going to have to be taken against immigration immediately.
