Freud's Work on Dreams

             Dreams are the nocturnal images that arise from a source other then the ordinary consciousness during human sleep and can be either completely or partially remembered on awakening. These nocturnal images have always fascinated mankind since time immemorial and there are many historical records of this fascination and attempts to analyze dreams. The Bible tells of the fall of King Nebuchadnezzar, which was revealed as the fall of a great statue of several metals by Daniel. The parents of Jesus, Joseph and Mary were warned of the danger to child Jesus by a dream. In more recent history, Joan of Arch predicted her death through one of her dreams (Find Your Fate.Com, 2004).
             Whereas many explanations for dreams and dreaming have been offered over time, Sigmund Freud, the famous psychologist and psychoanalyst who had such a profound impact on the development of psychology and psychoanalysis, was very interested in studying dreams and produced several publications as a result of his research on the subject. Sigmund Freud was born in Freiberg, in Moravia, on 6th of May 1856 and studied at the Vienna University. He was interested in medicine and psychology and in relation to the study of dreams, his main work on dreams entitled The Interpretation of Dreams, was published in 1900. He also published the works On Dreams and Dreams and Hysteria subsequently, in 1901. Freud was the father of the psychoanalytic movement, a related body of clinical technique, interpretive strategy, and developmental theory, which was articulated piecemeal in dozens of publications by Sigmund Freud, spread over a period of forty-five years.
