Ethan Frome is a story about a man who is torn between love and security. Ethan marries Zeena for security after he is left alone be his mother's death. When Zeena becomes ill, Mattie, a female relation is sent for. During her years stay Ethan falls in love with her. The movie version is much less satisfying than the novel. There are more significant diffrences between the movie and novel. There are more significant diffrences between the movie and novel than similiarites .
             A few similiarities exist between the movie and novel. The setting in the movie was the same as in the book. A nice snowy countryside. The beginning and end of the movie and novel are mostly the same, with Mattie coming in the beginning of the movie and her and Ethan driving their sled into the tree at the end.
             Several significant diffrences exist between the movie and novel. One diffrence was the scene in the movie where Zeena tried to poison herself because she wanted Ethan so bad. Also, in the movie Ethan and Mattie on kissed once and is was only a peck. In the movie they shared a couple of passionate kisses. Mattie and Ethan did not go into the store together to get the glue to fix Zeena's red pickle dish. The engineer in the book was an new minister in the movie. The book made Mattie out to be very attractive and the actor casted for her in the movie was less attractive than Zeena. In the book the trunk inccident happens with Mattie but in the movie that incident happens with Zeena instead of Mattie. Olive was hanging from the door in the book and Ethan imagined it as an sign that Zeena had died in the movie the olive branch was not shown. Last but not least in the book he worte a note to Zeena to tell her that he had gone to the west
