Because there will always be a performance gap between the very best desktop computers and the very best handheld devices, the method used to deliver wireless data to these devices will have to effectively address this gap. As this gap changes over time, standards will have to continually evolve to keep pace with available functionality and market needs.
             The Internet World Wide Web (WWW) architecture provides a very flexible and powerful information delivery model as shown in the following figure. Applications and content are presented in standard data formats, and are browsed by applications known as web browsers. The web browser is a networked application, i.e., it sends requests for named data objects to a network server and the network server responds with the data encoded using the standard formats.
             • The user specifies the URL of the Web Application that has to be contacted.
             • The Browser (client machine) makes an HTTP request as identified by a URL of the Web Server. This request is made over the Internet.
             • The Web Server processes the HTTP request. The URL may refer to a static file or a servlet or other script application. In the first case, the Web Server fetches the file and adds an HTTP header to it. The URL specifies the script application, the Web Server runs the application and an HTML is generated dynamically.
             • The resultant HTML file is sent to the client using HTTP protocol.
             The browser processes the HTML file and displays it to the user.
             The WAP information delivery model is similar to the WWW information delivery model. This provides several benefits to the application developer community, including a familiar programming model, a proven architecture, and the ability to leverage existing tools (e.g., Web Servers, XML tools, etc.).
