Changing Tradition in Simply Maria

             Have you ever thought of how you could take good care of your family if you didn't have access to the U.S.A? Put yourself in the shoes of a Mexican. Have you ever sat down to think how hard it is for them to immigrate to the U.S.A and then make a living? They arrive illegally and they act like they still live in Mexico and keep the same traditions. This is especially true in Mexican men who think women are to serve them and are only good for cooking, cleaning, and having children. It confuses young women that are growing up in a country that embraces female independence, yet have parents that deprive them of it. The main idea of "Simply Maria" is that tough transition and how it affects the dreams of a young girl. Josefina Lopez uses both literary and theatrical elements to bring across this idea.
             There are many elements in "Simply Maria" that help us understand the main idea. Right from the beginning we can observe, literally, how the Mexican woman is expected to act no matter where she is. This is seen toward the end of scene two. The lines are said by Girl 1, Girl 2, and Girl 3. They say, "Your goal is to reproduce. And your only purpose in life is to serve three men: Your father, your husband, and your son." (1986) The men are portrayed as the most important gender. They are the ones women must "serve". Who cares about your mother or your daughter? They have to do the same thing as well. It is clear that Mexican women are meant to have babies and endure all kind of abuse from the men. I don't think that mentality will take them far if they are planning on moving to the U.S.A to make a living. In the U.S.A, women are allowed to work and help out with economical aspects. They are also free to reach for their dreams regardless of what those dreams are. If you want to be an American citizen you have to act like one to succeed.
