A Prayer for Owen Meany

             As one grows older, one may change interests and continue to pursue the same interests that one had during childhood. In A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving, the main character Owen Meany develops and changes through out the novel. While changing, he also remains the same.
             Owen is devout religious through the entire course of the novel. He was told from a young age (11) that he was a virgin birth. This not only strengthens his belief in God, but it reinforces it. Any doubt that Owen had once had was erased. One day when John and Owen were playing basketball at night on an outdoor court, Owen decided to teach John what faith is. There was a statue on the playground, but it was so dark that neither of them could actually see it. Owen said to John ""YOU ABSOLUTELY KNOW SHE'S THERE-EVEN THOUGH YOU CAN'T SEE HER?" he asked me. "Yes!" I screamed. "WELL, NOW YOU KNOW HOW I FEEL ABOUT GOD," said Owen Meany. "I CAN'T SEE HIM-BUT I ABSOLUTELY KNOW HE IS THERE!" (Irving 451)." This really shows Owen's faith and belief in God. If he could actually put into words and teach his best friend John, he really must have had faith.
             Owen's relationships pretty much stayed constant. He had a life long best friend, John Wheelwright. Along the way, he made some friendships and acquaintances. He met John's cousin Hester at John's mother's wedding at a young age. He kept in touch with her and they eventually became a couple. Owen always had a way of mesmerizing people with his size and voice. His teachers always loved him, and he was a pretty likable guy. He did have his opinions though.
