Freshman Blues

             Who are you? You need a shave. You need a haircut. You need to lose weight. You need to eat right. You need to exercise. You need to start waking up early. You need to quit drinking so much. You need to stop thinking about such tiny meager matters and start thinking about the world ahead of you. You need to get a life. You need to turn around.
             Looking at myself in the mirror I started to mentally chastise myself for everything I could think of. After a while, I stopped and decided I needed to turn around. My life wasn¡¯t always like this. When I first came into college I had a dream, I had a mission and I felt like I could take on the world. This morning I looked at myself in revulsion and had to stop criticizing myself before I took up the whole day in front of the mirror. I had my finger up to the reflection of myself and was slightly wagging it as an old woman would do. Maybe I was going crazy. Only a single semester later, I was transformed into a helpless, weak, and almost constantly hung over typical stereotype of a worthless college student.
             Half a semester ago I wasn¡¯t like this I was sure. I put down my shaving razor and took all my washing materials with me back to my dorm room. Even the usually cheerful slap slapping of my slippers on the cold floor seemed to be very limp and without hope today. I opened the door of my dorm room and suddenly I was angry. I felt disgusted.
             I felt cheated out of all the fantasies I had of college life ever since I worked my rear off in order to get into university. I felt brainwashed at all the lies that were told to me about what a happy life I would lead when I would get into college. ¡°Just study a little harder. After the entrance exams, the world is yours.¡± That was the most common lie that I was told by most of my elders and superiors. Having been told that lie so much, I decided that it was true.
