             Fad Diets: Are They a Safe Method of Losing Weight
             Fad diets are not a safe way to efficiently loss weight. Obesity is something that has plagued the American culture for centuries. Unlike many continents, we have an over abundance of food, and food that isn't healthy for that matter. We have a real lack of drive to loss weight in a healthy way as well. Thus, we turn to magic pills, potions and supplements to do the weight loss for us. Fad diets are not a safe way to efficiently loss weight.
             A diet is some sort of plan for eating. (Viable Herbal 2) Today, more than fifty-four million Americans are on a diet; yet, only five percent manage to keep their weight off. Over half of the adult population is overweight. (Consumer 24) 300,000 people die of obesity related deaths per year. (Women's Changing Roles 130) Today more than 1,000 papers are put out on obesity and over $35,000,000 a year is spent on research. (Viable Herbal) Obesity is based on the hypothalamus (master gland cell). This gland is controls significant biological functions. It also reads leptin levels. Leptin is what is in fat cells that make us eat more. Everyone's weight is genetically determined; thus, making it hard for one to loss weight once you've reached your determined weight. (1) I included two graphs to show the information of women and diets. The top pie graph shows the percentage of American women that are on diets. The bottom graph shows the percentage of women that manage to keep their weight off. The graphs are located on page seven.
             Today, there are many basic diets that fan our midst, promising great results. Most are fad diets that do little for ones overall health.
             The Zone diet is a diet in which the mind focuses on the diet. You allegedly experience fat loss, greater athletic performance and improved mental productivity while in the zone. (Consumer 26)
