"The Dam" is a poem in which the narrator's voice is critical, and plays a very important role in guiding the reader throughout the scene, making it feel what the narrator felt when he lived the experience.
             This voice responds to the one of a very strong and defined character, whose personality seems unchangeable and very right. His words in the poem shoe a very rational way of thinking, and everything he says in really coherent and comprehensive; his feelings towards the valley are clearly expressed, resulting this from a well-balanced mind. He is sensible and wise, and he is able to judge as wrong the decision that was taken about building the dam in his town, a fact that has really offended and disappointed him, because it was not consulted previously. He differs from the other inhabitants because of his reaction to what has happened to their valley; at first, all villagers were happy, and they encouraged the project, which gave them a little earning in a period in which the economy was not growing. But later, when they saw water rising and their homes sinking, and they had to be re-located, they just accepted it and left to live in the city, whilst the narrator refused to leave, confronting the sad truth of what was left in their village.
             This town shows he is tightly attached to his roots, and his bonds to what belonged to his culture have not been broken or corrupted. He is melancholic, regretful for everything he has lost, but he is courageous enough to stay near the dam whenever the level of water decreases, and see what has been left of his old settlement. Although he is realistic and logical, he let his feelings towards this place spring, and that was what kept him there, so eager to see what the water has done, and at the same time, dreaming that his memories override reality, making everything go back to normal. "Somehow, I stayed behind", clearly supports the idea that he will not abandon what he has lived and worked ...
