The original plan was to have the American division invade and capture the western side of Sicily but this plan would have moderated the size of their forces. The British and Canadian divisions under General Montgomery were to capture "Catania airfields, Augusta, Syracuse, and the taking of Gela and neighboring airfields" . The American forces under General Patton were to obtain Palermo and the neighboring airfields on the western side of Sicily. These primary documents were recorded during the war and therefore were influenced by the opinions and interests of the nations involved in the coalition.
