William Golding's classic novel The Lord of the Flies is a novel about a group of English schoolboys who were in a plane-wreck and left stranded on a deserted island. The island starts as a utopia but soon turns to chaos. At first, the stranded boys cooperate, attempting to gather food, hunt, make shelters, and keep their firing burning to signal for help. The leader of all the stranded boys was Ralph also known as "the boy with fair hair" and piggy was Ralph's chubby sidekick whose glasses became very useful to ignite the fires. Although Ralph tried very hard to make a good environment by delegating different tasks to certain people so that everyone would do their fair share of the work, many of the boys would rather swim, play, sleep, or hunt for food on the island. Soon Ralph's rules were being ignored and chaos started to break out. Jack, the red headed leader of the pig hunters always wanted to be leader of all the boys and his time finally came. He lured away many of the boys to the other side of the island, that they called Castle Rock. Soon a new tribe was created at Castle Rock were Jack was the leader. Most of the boys left, only Eric, Sam, Piggy, and some of the littluns (boys from the age 4-6) stayed with Ralph. The situation slowly started to grow worse as civilization continued to fall away. Ralph had then discovered that instead of being the hunter, he had become the hunted. This gasping novel explores the boundary between human and animal instinct, all on the brutal playing field of adolescent competition.
