They comprised a widespread of occupations and educational levels . They received money for their participation . The experiment took place in a laboratory of Yale University .
             Three roles were required for the experiment - a 'experimenter¡, a 'teacher¡ and a 'learner¡. The experimenter wore a grey technician¡s coat, as was perceived as stern natured. The learner was a 47 year old Irish-American ¡§who most observers found mild-mannered and likeable¡ . The experimenter informed the naive subject of a 'cover story¡ .
             After participating in a rigged event that always determined the naive subject to be the teacher, the subject watched the learner being strapped to an 'electric chair¡. This would be used to deliver the punishment. A sample shock was given to the subject to prove credibility. The subject was informed that no harm would be incurred The learning task involved pair-associated words. The learner had to correctly identify the pair initially suggested. Upon presenting a wrong answer, the teacher was instructed to announce and deliver a higher voltage shock the next time an incorrect answer was given. The generator used to deliver these shocks appeared authentic to ensure it genuineness. At certain points the learner gave negative feedback . Normally subjects would turn to the experimenter for guidance. Subjects were sequentially prodded with standard responses to continue. This experiment continued until the subject refused to continue, or the maximum shock level was reached. Milgram assigned his subjects into two categories.
