The Scarlet Letter

             The Scarlet Letter is structured around three main scaffold scenes and the characters involved in them. As we look at these three scaffold scenes we will se how the main characters of the story change in image and in personality. These three scaffold scenes all take place in the middle of town in the market place. The book starts off with the fist scaffold scene, where Hester Prynne leaves the prison to stand on the scaffold in the market place.
             In the first scene we meat our four main characters Hester Prynne, Pearl, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Chillingworth. Hester looks back to her past for comfort but then brings herself back to the reality of her shame. Narrator "Yes!-these were her realities,-all else had vanished!"(61). In this scene we meat Chillingworth who we find to be Hesters husband. He is in shock of what she has done. But he seeks revenge on the man who also deserves to stand on the scaffold. Chillingworth "He will be known!"(65). We also meat the reverend Dimmesdale. He wishes upon Hester to reveal the identity of her fellow sinner. We see how he wishes to let his sine out but he cant do it him self. By the second scaffold scene we se many changes within the characters.
             By the time we get to the second scaffold scene seven years have past. Within these seven years the view of Hester and her scarlet A has changed in the minds of the towns people. Narrator "...many people refused to interpret the scarlet A by its original signification. They said that it meant Able..."(168). Hester lived with her sin and excepts it without any complaints. As we look at Dimmesdale he has become ill and looks tired and defeated from having to withhold his sin. In the second scaffold scene he stands on the scaffold in the protection of night to free himself from some of his guilt.
