war on drugs and like any difficult war, it has its fair share of human and economic casualties, but I firmly believe that legalizing drugs is not the solution because illegal drugs serve no useful purpose, decriminalization will prove to be more exorbitant in the long run and experimental drug legalization has failed in other places.
             Drug abuse is a serious problem in the United States with over 12 million habitual abusers. Drugs have a negative impact on society: AIDS spreads more rapidly among drug users because of use of unhygienic needles, crime is also more rampant in areas where drug use is common, because these people need to find money to pay for the drugs, also, taxpayers are the ones that shell out the money to pay for drug rehabilitation centers. Besides the social consequences, any medical journal can testify that drugs have serious short-term and long-term health repercussions. All drugs are addictive, some are carcinogenic and infant mortality of drug-abusive mothers is higher. Although drugs intake has detrimental health effects, it can ironically be used to relive the pain of terminally ill patients. This property of drugs has been exploited by people who support legalization as they argue it will make drugs more accessible to those who need them. However, medicines such as Marinol, that contains marijuana, are FDA approved and available to those who really require it. Drugs can be very dangerous in the hands of all other users and people should not be given access to drugs for recreational purposes.
